Single Board Computer offers stereoscopic 3D capabilities

Avalue Technology Inc. is unveiling a new cost-effective 3.5-inch single board computer – ECM-BYT2. ECM-BYT2 is powered by the newest Intel® Atom processor E3800 family and Intel® Celeron processor J1900 family, a system-on-chip (SoC) formerly codenamed "Bay Trail." WolfVision 'live' 3D images captivate cardiology congress delegates in Berlin

WolfVision Visualizer systems have often been used worldwide to assist with the training of surgeons. Surgical training by nature, often involves demonstrating procedures containing intricate movements and small details which need to be shown to large audiences. For demanding situations such as these, WolfVision has developed its 3D Visualizer system. The unique VZ-C3D stereoscopic System from WolfVision allows interactive workshops to be held that enable materials and motion to be vividly and accurately displayed in onscreen in 3D - in this example, for the audience, it is just like standing in front of the operating table.

The new opportunity to display 3-dimensional presentation material has been used by PD Dr. med. Christian Butter, head of the Cardiology Department at the Brandenburg
Heart Center, in Berlin. In a three-part training series on interventional treatment of structural heart disease he invited heart specialists from all over Germany to Berlin, in order to present the latest research findings in this area. In order to demonstrate complex types of treatment, he used the VZ-C3D Visualizer System. "With the WolfVision 3D system we could illustrate the complex operations with total realism. Even tiny details could be made easily accessible to a large audience." Presenters and participants were very impressed as Dr. Katharina Wassilew, Director of Cardiac Pathology at the Heart Center in Berlin demonstrated operational procedures on heart
valves 'live' using the 3D Visualizer. "The stereoscopic depth was amazing. One sees here that 3D cannot be dismissed as a gimmick, and it is really fantastic for this purpose", said Dr. Butter.

Thanks to the perfect 3D images, and the improved depth perception, procedures for different types of heart disease could be impressively demonstrated and easily explained live to the audience. Due to the special WolfVision light system, hearts and their cavities were perfectly illuminated and displayed without shadows, and the accurate color reproduction revealed the finest nuances of the variations in the tissue. Dipl. Ing. Detlef Jarke, information technology expert at the Immanuel Diakonie, Berlin added enthusiastically: "It is a great technique and ideally suited to this application."

The International 3D and Advanced Imaging Society Announced Its 2014 Technology Award Winners

On September 24th, the International 3D and Advanced Imaging Society honored nineteen companies and organizations for "Advancing the Entertainment Industry through Technology," during the Society's 5th Annual Entertainment Technology and New Product Awards luncheon ceremony held at Paramount Pictures in Hollywood.

The Society's Technology Awards Committee votes annually in selecting products and systems, which through their "innovation and impact" make movies and content more exciting and successful.

"This year, our committee was amazed at the range of entries, from lasers to hologram technology," said Society Awards Chairman Buzz Hays, Studio Chief of the True Image Company. "These are amazing technologies that will be captivating movie fans and TV audiences in the next few years."

Honored with the Society's Lumiere™ statuettes were Barco for its DP4K-60L Laser Projector, Walt Disney Studios Technologies and partners ARRI and Fraunhofer Institute Berlin for their new Tri-Focal 3D Camera System, Dolby Labs for its new extended dynamic range Dolby Vision, Prime Focus World for its 3D Hybrid Stereo Pipeline, Volfoni 3D for its SmartCrystal Diamond theater system, Panasonic for three new 4K cameras and recorders, and View Holographics from the UK for its hologram technology system.

"The nineteen companies honored came from brilliant teams in ten countries including the US, China, Japan, Korea, England, Wales, France, Belgium, Germany, and Canada," said Society President Jim Chabin. "Hollywood and all of us in entertainment are being enriched by a truly global marketplace of brilliant new ideas for making our content more exciting for audiences everywhere," he added.

A 2014 Lifetime Achievement Award was presented to John Rupkalvis of Los Angeles for his "pioneering development of motion picture and television products and systems."

In presenting the award, Society Co-Founder Lenny Lipton said, "John is a legend to 3D and other hardware designers and inventors, but he isn't well known to the fans and audiences who have thrilled at the on-screen magic that his technology has made possible over the last seven decades."

Explore the Wonders of the Galapagos Islands in a Stunning New 3D Film

The California Science Center invites audiences to an exploration of a paradise unlike any other, with the breathtaking IMAX film, "Galapagos 3D: Nature's Wonderland" narrated by Jeff Corwin.

"Galapagos 3D: Nature's Wonderland" brings to the giant screen these remarkable volcanic islands, home to some of nature's most incredible living creatures. Located close to the equator in the Pacific Ocean, at the confluence of several nutrient-rich currents, the Galapagos archipelago has developed over millions of years in relative isolation. The result is a living museum of nature, with an abundance of species of plants and unique animals that have adapted to thrive in this challenging environment. Giant half-ton long-necked tortoises lumber among dancing blue-footed boobies and flightless cormorants. Small penguins living thousands of miles from their natural habitats share the seas with unique marine iguanas that spit sea-salt. This is an incredible story of discovery, of survival against the odds, and of nature's ingenuity.

"I was thrilled to provide the narration for this amazing project," said Corwin, wildlife conservationist and Emmy award-winning TV host. "When I saw the film for the first time, it literally took my breath away. Despite traveling the world for 20 years hosting and creating documentaries, I was thoroughly impressed with this incredible journey."

After viewing the film, Science Center visitors are encouraged to visit the "Ecosystems" exhibition, where concepts from the film like adaptation are illustrated through a blend of live plants, animals, and hands-on exhibits in 11 immersive environments, or zones. "Ecosystems" occupies 45,000 square feet and contains more than 250 species of plants and animals. Guests will find out why isolation breeds change and visit a simulated tropical island research station in the "Island Zone," where they will learn about evolution by studying some of the unique animals that make these isolated habitats their homes. In the "Extreme Zone," guests explore the desert, rocky shores, and more to discover how environmental factors test the limits of plants and animals—and how they have adapted to flourish, just like the animals featured in "Galapagos 3D: Nature's Wonderland."

"There are not too many places more powerful than the Galapagos Islands when it comes to understanding our planet," said Corwin. "Galapagos 3D: Nature's Wonderland" perfectly captures what makes the creatures living there such unique characters."

Produced by Anthony Geffen, written by David Attenborough and narrated by Jeff Corwin, "Galapagos 3D: Nature's Wonderland" is directed by Martin Williams and features original music composed by Joel Douek. The film is a Colossus Productions presentation in association with SKY 3D, distributed by nWave Pictures Distribution.

"Galapagos 3D: Nature's Wonderland" was filmed on location over a ten- month period in 2012 and 2013, followed by five months of post-production. Using breakthrough digital 3D filmmaking technologies and featuring 4K ultra-high resolution imagery, the producers have brought to life the extraordinary world of the Galapagos archipelago in a way that has not been possible before. Reel FX Unveils Dedicated Virtual Reality Division, Reel FX VR

Independent animation studio Reel FX announced a new division - Reel FX VR - dedicated to the creation of cutting edge virtual reality content for virtual reality platforms including the Samsung Gear VR Innovator Edition. The division will be primarily focused on client work for major studios and commercial agencies as well as content needs for Reel FX's original films such as The Book of Life (Guillermo del Toro, Jorge R. Gutierrez) with 20th Century Fox, in theaters October 17, 2014.

The move to establish Reel FX VR comes after the release of multiple high-profile VR projects in early 2014 ranging from stylized family-friendly content for Chuck E. Cheese's to a slick visual experience for Legendary Picture's Pacific Rim which debuted at 2014 ComicCon. More content debuted at IFA in Berlin in early September including a mobile version of the Pacific Rim Jaeger Pilot experience and a stereoscopic trailer for the studio's film, The Book of Life.

Reel FX's history and relationship with Oculus Rift dates back to Oculus' 2012 Kickstarter campaign. Founder and ECD Dale Carman was an early adopter of the technology and one of the first to begin developing for the platform.

"I knew the moment I encountered Oculus on Kickstarter that it was magic. In anticipation of the Reel FX VR launch, Reel FX has brought on multiple team members over the past year that will focus on and grow the VR business. Veteran interactive executive Dan Ferguson joined the team in late 2013 as Director of Digital Interactive. Rounding out the unit is Interactive Account Manager Tina Ghezzi. Artists from Reel FX's feature and commercial crews will lead the creative teams.

Introducing Pinć, a compact VR case & iOS platform for the iPhone 6

Cordon announced Pinć (pronounced PINCH), a mobile VR platform and smartphone case unfolding into VR glasses allowing users to maximize on the power of their iPhone 6. Pinć is available for preorder starting October 1st, 2014 with orders shipping in the Spring of 2015.

The Pinć team has developed a patent pending prototype for the only pocket sized mobile platform bringing VR headsets out of the gaming world and into the mainstream. The device is controlled by optical control rings worn on index fingers that pinch to click with users' hands. Pinć is a groundbreaking iOS platform built on the concept of spatial computing, turning browsing, multitasking and shopping into an immersive virtual reality experience.

"We see the opportunity for VR as much broader than just gaming. Areas like everyday computing, productivity and commerce are very interesting for us. When we step inside our mobile phones and interact with apps in virtual environments, we get into a new realm of computing" said Milan Baic, President of Cordon, who's heading Pinć product development.

Mobile users expect more and more of their smartphones. The industry has had quantum leaps in mobile computing capabilities, cameras and 3D graphics in mobile devices over the last few years, yet the opportunity to tap into that computing power via screen size has increased by little over an inch.

"The biggest limitation for customers, developers and brands is the screen and interaction size on mobile devices," explains Baic. The Pinć team aims to expand the capabilities of these mobile devices utilizing VR and control technology to dramatically expand the interaction, work and viewing area.

Pinć is releasing an SDK for developers that want to tap into the Pinć app ecosystem in early 2015. Canon Cinema EOS Captures Space in 4K for New IMAX 3D Film

Canon U.S.A. Inc., a leader in digital imaging solutions, announced that Canon Cinema EOS digital cameras and lenses have been selected by IMAX Corporation for an exciting mission to capture 4K footage in space. The cameras and lenses left Earth Saturday on a SpaceX Dragon spacecraft launched from the Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida. The equipment will arrive at the International Space Station, where astronauts will capture stunning 4K content for the upcoming new 3D film, tentatively titled A Perfect Planet, a presentation of Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures and IMAX Entertainment.

Directed by acclaimed filmmaker Toni Myers, the IMAX 3D space project will offer breathtaking, illuminating views of Earth from space, exploring mankind's future on and off the planet. Renowned large format cinematographer James Neihouse serves as the film's director of photography and trained the astronauts who will man the cameras while in orbit.

The IMAX production team selected Canon EOS C500 EF digital cinema cameras, Canon EOS 1D-C digital SLR cameras, and a selection of Canon Cinema Zoom and Prime lenses for the project. The EOS C500s will be paired with Codex recorders to capture 4K images.

"Of the digital cameras we tested for spaceflight, the Canon EOS C500's image quality was more film-like than the other systems," said Neihouse. "The sharpness is superior to some of the larger sensors. And it is more user-friendly for the astronauts. We have a good track record with Canon cameras in space."

"I am thrilled that the Canon Cinema EOS cameras we have selected launched to the International Space Station and our astronaut crews can now begin filming spectacular scenes for our new project," said Toni Myers, who will produce, direct, write and edit the documentary film. "The lightweight, flexible Canon cameras produce remarkable imagery and are ideal for capturing scenes of our beautiful Planet Earth.

"When we launched the Cinema EOS product line, Canon hoped to inspire filmmakers to take their craft to new heights. We are honored that IMAX, Toni Myers, James Neihouse, and the astronauts took our challenge so literally. To have our cameras and lenses travel to space is an incredible cause for celebration. IMAX's 3D film will be shot over the course of the next year with multiple crews of astronauts conducting principal photography. The film is tentatively set for release in early 2016.

MasterImage 3D Challenges RealD's Utility Model Patent Application in Russia

MasterImage 3D, a worldwide leader in 3D display technologies for digital cinema, challenged the validity of RealD's utility model (UM) patent in Russia by filing an appeal before the Chamber for Patent Dispute. MasterImage 3D specifically asserts that RealD's utility model patent fails to meet the requirements for patent protection in Russia.

RealD's Russian utility model patent is not valid and lacks novelty and inventiveness, according to MasterImage 3D. In fact, the UM application was only successfully granted because Russian UM patents lacks substantive examination.

RealD's utility model patent application was filed in response to MasterImage 3D's new HORIZON3D product line which uses a light recycling, triple-beam design to achieve industry-leading brightness and accommodate contemporary auditoriums with wide screens and immersive experiences. The HORIZON3D is capable of 33% light efficiency and a throw-ratio as low as 0.8.

MasterImage 3D asserted that it will stand with customers in all cases, as RealD has taken varying actions to threaten customers around the world. If RealD continues unsupported threats against MasterImage 3D customers, MasterImage 3D will take any action necessary to stop them. MasterImage 3D is also evaluating their own legal remedies to counter RealD's misuse of the UM patent.

MasterImage 3D filed and has been granted several invention patent applications in Korea for their innovative technologies in 3D cinema systems. This technology is the design for the HORIZON3D product-line. This inventive patent application has been filed in Russia based on Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT) procedures. RealD's utility model in question was filed after that of MasterImage 3D's invention patent application.

First Book on Postage Stamps, Hologram Collection Published

According to author and philatelist Hans I. Bjelkhagen, holograms on postage stamps have become a new topical subject in philately, and there has been a growing interest among philatelists in collecting such items for many years now. Up until 2014, holographic stamps have been issued in approximately 80 countries, and the total number of different postal items containing holograms is estimated at 450 pieces. In his book, "Holography and Philately" (published by Xlibris UK) Bjelkhagen provides information on stamps issued worldwide since 1988.

"Holography and Philately" places emphasis on different types of hologram stamps and images, their producers and the story behind the stamps. Bjelkhagen provides the details concerning the items described, such as size, identification numbers, denomination, perforation and edition at the end of the book. In addition, official and special first day covers (FDCs) with cachet holograms are presented and described.

As regards holographic images, quite a few of them are space-related, including planets, satellites, space crafts, space stations, gamma radiation and cosmonaut images. Some hologram images are two-channel or animated types of images. A few of the stamp images of the animated type are quite unique, but philatelists are often unaware of this quality, being also, unfortunately, unable to correctly view such stamps.

"Holography and Philately" is perfect for philatelists who are interested in topical postage stamps, companies producing security holograms and hologram collectors. In no other philatelic or holographic publication will the reader find such extensive information on hologram stamps, accompanied by an abundance of high-quality color illustrations throughout the book.

Virtalis Shrinks the Globe for Vestas

Vestas Mediterranean in Madrid is the latest Vestas office to install a Virtalis ActiveWorks system, taking the number within the group into double figures. Allan Molbech, VR administrator at Vestas explained: "With Virtalis ActiveWall and ActiveSpace systems in Chennai, India, Louisville, US, and, of course, in Denmark at our Aarhus HQ, as well as a number of ActiveMove portable Virtual Reality (VR) systems in our sales offices around the world, we can, and do, collaborate across time zones. Our ActiveMoves, HMD-based ActiveSpaces and our large scale ActiveWalls have enabled us to have efficient, technical communication unaffected by distance.

"The fact that will surprise most people is that we, in some cases, find VR better than reality for the verification of designs. We've been able to do away with physical geometry and, in so doing, rectify errors at an earlier stage than ever before and communicate with more people in a more understandable way. Since we installed our first Virtalis ActiveWall five years ago, we've significantly broadened the key stakeholders involved in a new product design."

Vestas believes that the company wide adoption of VR technology shortened the product lifecycle of its V112-3MW Turbine significantly. The inclusion of Health and Safety specialists, transportation experts, blue collar workers from the assembly line, service engineers and sales people, as well as the more directly connected design and production engineers in the design of the V112-3MW led to a more coherent design sooner than would have been possible by any other method.

The Vestas team, which comprises 40 or so "advanced users", calls its biweekly design collaborations "Serious Gaming", with each individual being represented by their own avatar who is able to collaborate with the other avatars in a virtual space that transcends national boundaries through the corporate network. In addition, Vestas' VR systems are also used several times daily for local design reviews and customer reviews.

Vestas Mediterranean's Virtalis installation comprises both an ActiveSpace and an ActiveWall located within a mock up of a turbine nacelle. The ActiveSpace, which fosters detailed technical investigations, boasts an nVisor ST50 HMD capable of delivering a 50o field of view at 1280x1024 resolution. The ActiveWall was designed with larger groups in mind and centres round a 3mx2.25m screen. The images are rear projected by a Christie Mirage with a short throw lens projecting onto the Stewart Screen via a mirror. Movements with the systems are tracked by an InterSense IS-900 Micro Trax. The fully integrated systems are run via Virtalis StereoWorks software and Virtalis Exchange on a HP workstation powered by an NVIDIA Quadro 6000 graphics card.

Mirella Vitale, VP Global Marketing, Vestas, explained: "Virtalis' system in the Vestas Experience Centre at our Mediterranean Headquarters is mainly used for marketing; though that may broaden over time. The VR technology allows us to clearly demonstrate the technical advantages of the Vestas product portfolio and the safety features of our design. Our customers are taken on a virtual tour of the nacelle and are able to interact with the different components in the same way that our onsite technical experts would do. The feedback from our customers is very positive - they find the experience to be both technically enlightening as well as enjoyable."
