Meant to be Seen (MTBS) Releases Vireio Perception 2.0 FREE Open Source VR Drivers For Oculus Rift, castAR, and MORE
3D-News Posted: Tuesday, December 17, 2013 (10:14 UTC) | Posted By: Webmaster

Founded in 2007, Meant to be Seen (mtbs3D.com) is the world's leading stereoscopic 3D and VR gaming community. Among other things, it is recognized as the unofficial launchpoint of The Oculus Rift by Palmer Luckey, who has been a moderator on MTBS for several years.

Vireio Perception was originally authored by Andres Hernandez, another long time moderator who currently works for OculusVR. Vireio has since undergone a major rewrite and feature upgrade. Version 2.0 owes much of its development to volunteer coders Denis Reischl, Josh Brown and Grant Bagwell.

"VR drivers have been long criticized as not being able to deliver experiences that are competitive with native VR because there were too many shortcomings. Vireio delivers low latency, readable VR interfaces, snappy head tracking, and a growing library of support from games that were never intended to be in VR in the first place," said Neil Schneider, Founder of Meant to be Seen and Manager of Immersive Technology Services for the Faculty of Business and IT at the University of Ontario Institute of Technology.

To help the effort and maximize game compatibility, publishers are encouraged to email product codes or digital game purchase gift cards to vireio@mtbs3D.com. While not a replacement for native VR coding, Vireio Perception is an opportunity for game publishers to bring a new VR experience and sales opportunity to older games that won't be directly coded for VR.

Founded by Jeri Ellsworth and Rick Johnson, castAR is the latest Kickstarter craze having raised over $1 million for their AR/VR mass market solution. Vireio Perception is the first middleware VR driver to support their hardware.

"We are thrilled to have support from Vireio Perception drivers as this will allow users to take their existing games and easily expand them into the VR space," said Jeri Ellsworth, President of castAR.

Invented by Denis Reischl, Vireio Perception features VRBoost, a freeware add-on that maximizes visual flexibility and strips latency by getting direct control over the game's cameras before middleware adds extra processing cycles. VRBoost also adds game controller compatibility and a more natural use of mouse and head tracking control which was otherwise impossible with VR middleware drivers. Tools are provided for gamers to create their own VRBoost profiles.

Additional features unique to Vireio Perception 2.0 include HUD and GUI resizing, World Scale calibration, and the B.R.A.S.S.A. toolset which lets users analyze the design of their games and create their own VR game profiles.

"I've learned a lot from helping develop Vireio Perception, and it's exciting to be part of something like this. Anyone who wants to sharpen their skills and build a portfolio should get involved," said Denis Reichl, VRBoost's author and inventor.

On December 23, 2013, Vireio Perception will be updated again with even more functionality and increased game compatibility. Additional VR developers are encouraged to participate.

Renewed Interest in Glasses Free 3D Presents Opportunity for Zecotek's Patented 3D Display Technology
3D-News Posted: Monday, December 16, 2013 (15:23 UTC) | Posted By: Webmaster

Zecotek Photonics Inc., a developer of leading-edge photonics technologies for medical, industrial and scientific markets, announced that its wholly owned subsidiary Zecotek Display Systems Pte. Ltd. is demonstrating patented 3D display technology to major electronics companies in its lab in Vancouver, BC . The Company is in discussions with certain major electronics companies to co-develop an OLED/LED (organic light emitting diode) based, flat screen, glasses-free, true 3D HD television. This progress in the Zecotek Display Systems division, follows the recently signed collaborative joint venture agreement between Hamamatsu Photonics of Japan and Zecotek Imaging Systems to market and sell patented imaging technologies.

"With the sharp decline in the 3D consumer television market over the past year there is renewed interest in our patented 3D display technology," said Dr. A.F. Zerrouk , Chairman, President, and CEO of Zecotek Photonics Inc. "Price, combined with concerns about visual health, as well as the overall lack of quality in the current 3D television, have all contributed to a poor consumer market outlook. Zecotek`s 3D display offers a realistic, HD, glasses free multi-viewer 3D experience. We have overcome the main technical barriers required to meet the consumer preference for flat screen form factors and HD picture quality with available OLED/LED flat screen display technologies. Our strategy is to partner with industry leading OEMs to commercialize our patented technologies. Renewed discussions are now in progress and we feel confident about reaching a mutually rewarding business arrangement."

Current OLED/LED based flat screen display technologies are now meeting higher switching speeds necessary to support Zecotek`s 3D display technology. The Company is actively pursuing major consumer electronics companies to develop a true, glasses-free, HD 3D experience using state-of-the-art fast OLED/LED panels. The application of Zecotek's 3D display system with fast OLED panels will enable a true 3D, HD flat screen display system which could revive the electronics 3D consumer market.

"In November 2011 our white paper on 3D display technology predicted the challenging consumer market place, pointing to the weakness in the 3D systems using special glasses. At the same time, the white paper indicated that once flat screen technologies, OLED in particular, evolved to higher switching speeds, Zecotek's unique display technology would be successfully applied to flat screen formats. This is now happening today," continued Dr. Zerrouk.

In parallel, rapid improvements in DLP (digital light processing) speeds and intensity have enhanced the performance of Zecotek's current 3D projection technology, providing an opportunity in specialized markets where a flat screen is not a critical requirement. As a result, the Company is finalizing the design of two new high speed DLP's designs: a large display suitable for advertising and large venues; and a desk top monitor that will have applications in design engineering, medical, teaching and gaming.

Patents have now been granted to Zecotek for its 3D display system in the United States , China , Europe , Eurasia, Russia and Australia . Patents have been filed and are pending in Japan , Korea and India .

About Zecotek's 3D Display System
Zecotek's 3D Display System is based on the auto-stereoscopic principle, but with substantial innovative and patented improvements and represents a new and unique generation of 3D displays. It has the capability of simultaneously presenting 3D and 2D images on the same screen, and for separate views at different viewing angles. Zecotek's true, auto-stereoscopic 3D2D display system requires no eyewear and has an effective viewing angle of 40 degrees with 90 concurrent perspectives allowing for multiple views at the same time. Another unique feature of the Zecotek system is constant motion parallax within the viewing angle. Motion parallax eliminates the sense of imbalance and dizziness during normal observation which can occur with polarized and shutter glasses used with other commercial systems. Furthermore Zecotek's 3D display features the preservation of the base resolution in every perspective view irrespective of the number of such views. This is not true for any other glasses-free displays where the base resolution is divided by the number of views. New Des Moines Business Hosts Unusual Grand Opening
3D-News Posted: Friday, December 6, 2013 (16:50 UTC) | Posted By: Webmaster

It is customary for a new business to announce its presence to the community by hosting a grand opening event, oftentimes with a ceremonial ribbon cutting, food, door prizes, special offers, entertainment, and opportunities for mingling and introductions. This month a new downtown Des Moines business is doing just that, but in a rather unusual way.

Juicebox Interactive, a digital marketing firm specializing in web design, branding and related services, is hosting its grand opening event online and in 3D.

The online grand opening event gives Juicebox Interactive a unique opportunity to showcase its design and technical skills, in addition to its creativity and marketing savvy. For attendees, the online grand opening means no need to dress up, no commute, and the freedom to stay all day or sneak out after just a few minutes.

The event may be online, but attendees will be able to enjoy free food, register for door prizes, participate in a ribbon cutting, chat live with company employees, learn about special offers, and enjoy 3D entertainment including a slideshow of Des Moines landmarks with "wow" effect.

Special invitees to the grand opening event received a pair of 3D glasses along with their invitation. The online grand opening event will continue through the middle of December. Guests can view the website at http://juiceboxinteractive.com/iowa3d and will need a pair of stereoscopic 3D glasses (with a red and blue lens) to view the website.

While Juicebox Interactive is a new company, it's comprised of a team of seasoned industry veterans. The firm's unique philosophy is outlined in a set of house rules which define how they treat clients.

"Only a few 3D websites have ever been built and they're incredibly tricky to build. It was a terrific way for us to demonstrate our creativity and talent," said Dale Bentlage, chief strategist at Juicebox.

IZON to Unveil 3D TV Without Glasses at 2014 International CES
3D-News Posted: Friday, December 6, 2013 (16:48 UTC) | Posted By: Webmaster

IZON will debut its line of 3D LED televisions without glasses at the 2014 International CES in Las Vegas, January 7-10, 2014.

IZON eliminates the need for glasses, which consumers found annoying and uncomfortable and ultimately spurred the decline of home 3D television.

Orlando, Florida-based television manufacturer IZON, LLC, a subsidiary of 3D Future Vision II, Inc., solves this problem by removing the need for glasses. The company is anticipating the launch of its line of LED screens with 32-inch, 47-inch and 55-inch glasses-free models by the second quarter of 2014.

IZON ultimately expects to create 1,500 new jobs in the U.S., where the product line will be assembled.

"We have R&D'd what we believe is the ultimate solution to 3D home entertainment," said Joseph DiFrancesco, Chairman and CEO of 3D Future Vision. "IZON displays the sharpest pictures available, providing an amazing viewing experience."

IZON has perfected the assembly process to produce sub-pixel accurate alignment in the 3D displays, creating clear crisp imagery at an affordable price. IZON features its "HyperMix3D™", a multi-threaded 3D rendering technology that uses algorithms that take advantage of multi-core GPUs and produces immersive 3D without eyestrain. In addition, IZON processes 3D stereo movies which can be seamlessly watched on its glasses-free TV's.

IZON's number one feature is user-friendly technology. The IZON team knows that keeping up with technology is not everyone's focus, acknowledging that most of the time people don't want to struggle with turning the volume up or even turning the TV on. IZON models are geared to be simple, smart and fun. Consumers can enjoy traditional broadcast in 2D, view broadcast 3D and their favorite 3D Blu-ray movies with a push of a button. The glasses-free 3D TV wide viewing angle of over 150 degrees produces sharp, vivid imagery that enables the entire family to participate in the experience.

IZON will offer an array of apps for streaming thousands of movies and television shows.

IZON will exhibit at Booth #48005.
