Wim Wender's feature film PINA, post produced using Mistika at PICTORION das werk, received the Grand Prize at Dimension 3
3D-News Posted: Friday, June 3, 2011 (5:30 UTC) | Posted By: Webmaster

SGO announced that well known German Director, Wim Wenders' Stereo 3D feature documentary film, titled PINA, was awarded the Grand Prize at 3D technology festival, Dimension 3, in Paris last month. SGO Mistika had a presence at Dimension 3 this year with various demonstrations taking place attracting great interest at their booth. Mistika was used from the beginning of pre-production and at the start of the post production process at PICTORION das werk for the project. PINA was the very first stereo 3D film ever to be shown at the Berlinale festival earlier this year in Germany.

PINA was filmed entirely in Stereo 3D, using two Sony HDC 1500 cameras, and was ingested into its Mistika's native Dual YUV-10bit JS format. DI Conform / Finishing and Stereo Artist at PICTORION das werk, Christian Troeger explained: "Throughout the challenging post production process of PINA, Mistika empowered us to work and deliver in various resolutions and formats in one timeline, which was a major advantage. This is why Mistika is considered the perfect system for challenging projects like this that require a demanding mastering process."

Christian continued: "Two weeks before the "picture lock" stage, we decided to capture the maximum length of every shot that we anticipated for the final edit, in order to have enough time to handle all the footage from over 130 original camera tapes." He added: "In an "A-mode style" timeline in Mistika, we flipped all mirror rig "eye" shots and created a DPX data-pool, which relied on the powerful capacity of our SAN storage system. It literally took seconds for Mistika to bring an offline edit to a high resolution stereo 3D conformed timeline; and even the VFX and grading departments could immediately start working from one data-pool from the Mistika system."

The initial Stereo 3D depth grading incurred more than two weeks of concerted effort with Alaine Derobe, a stereoscopic pioneer and the on-set stereographer. The colour grading took place at the same time as the stereo 3D depth grading with a flexible and efficient workflow that made it possible for director, Wim Wenders to colour-time his film, while Alaine simultaneously worked in the Mistika suite.
Due to Mistika's smart GUI and picture processing capability, Christian and Alaine were able to work at the same time on the graphics monitor in anaglyph mode and also project a full HD stereo picture on the suites against a silver screen. "The convergency graph and stereoscopic warp functionality in Mistika were a great help as it enabled me to check the images and geometrical issues, while working on them, and then still be able to make corrections where necessary." Christian noted.

Christian Troeger and Sven Heck, both DI Conform / Finishing and Stereo 3D Artists, also completed the 1:1.85 frame using Mistika, which would normally occur during colour timing in the grading suite. However, in this production, it made more sense to render all geometric changes, such as framing, stereo corrections, warps and compositing, all at once using one single Mistika process tree to maintain and protect image quality. Mistika was also used for various visual effects shots, as well as compositing, polarisation elimination, stabilisation fixes and other re-touches that were required.

The complete sub-titling of all European language versions were also completed in Mistika, which involved placing 2D sub-titles into Stereo 3D, followed by setting depths for each title separately, while concurrently, taking the image behind each sub-title, into account. The sub-titling was created in the final DCP resolution of 1998 x 1080 using Mistika, while the film retained the native format right up until the very end, thus avoiding any unnecessary time-consuming rescaling.

LA 3-D Club Presents Ocean Voyagers 3D
3D-News Posted: Friday, June 3, 2011 (5:29 UTC) | Posted By: Webmaster

On June 5, 2011, at 8pm, mammoth humpback whales and the vast blue of the Pacific come to life in full stereoscopic 3D when the LA 3-D Club (SCSC) presents the Los Angeles premiere of Ocean Voyagers 3D at the prestigious Downtown Independent Theater. A joint effort between Feodor Pitcairn Productions and 3D superpower PassmoreLab, Ocean Voyagers 3D is an exciting adventure where hardship pushes endurance to the brink, danger lurks around every bend, and where love knows no bounds.

Narrated by Oscar, Golden Globe and Emmy Award winning actress Meryl Streep, and filmed over a 5-year span in the waters of French Polynesia, Hawaii, Alaska and beyond, the film follows a mother humpback whale and her newborn calf in a "coming of age" journey for the neonate giant.

"The heart of this film is really the relationship between our humpback mother and her calf," remarks filmmaker Feo Pitcairn, "we had unprecedented access to these animals, filming them day after day, we established a real bond of trust. This enabled us to get rare and intimate footage, like the calf nursing and the mother resting on the sandy floor of the ocean. We're very excited to premiere the film in 3D in the Downtown Independent Theater - seeing this footage on a big screen in 3D is the closest thing to experiencing first hand what we experienced while filming them underwater."

"Rarely does a movie capture the essence of motherhood in the wild like Ocean Voyagers 3D," Producer, Laura Orthwein asserts.

This film is a stirring testament to not only the strength, grace and beauty of these animals, but also a revelation of all the challenges they face, both natural and man-made. They must persevere through months without food, journeys of thousands of miles, and predation by shark attack - as well as the threat of commercial whaling and entanglement in fishing gear. Moreover, Ocean Voyagers 3D includes rare footage of never-before-seen behavior of these powerful animals in their most intimate of moments.

"Seeing these animals behaving naturally in their environment, interacting with one-another as only this film could allow, is truly something else," says Greg Passmore of PassmoreLab, "the images are hauntingly beautiful, fascinatingly imaginative."

Coupled with spectacular imagery is Ocean Voyagers 3D's stellar soundtrack with stereo recordings of the humpback whale's mystic song over a backdrop of gorgeously composed music by Grant McLachlan.

"The goal [in composing the music] was to collect the essence of the ocean, and the humpback whale," says McLachlan - "to truly capture the might of these majestic animals, while accentuating their more tender appeal." The combination of stirring visuals, captivating sound and music, and strong thematic elements makes Ocean Voyagers 3D a timeless experience for the whole family to enjoy.

Ocean Voyagers 3D will also have a private premiere in New York on Saturday June 4th, hosted by Dimitris Athos. For information in attending the New York event please contact producer Laura Orthwein.

Working with the award winning Cimarron Group and its president Bob Farina, they decided to showcase scenes from "LOVE" and spotlight them on 3DFusion's 52" auto stereoscopic display (ASD).

Commented Bob Farina..."Since we are working with such remarkable images, we wanted to clearly convey the artistry and wow factor and draw viewer's right into the show. Add to that an amazing Beatles soundtrack; we had the added task of making the imagery compliment the audio, a real labor of 'LOVE'."

This first Broadcast Quality glasses-free 3D display is housed in a Mirage lobby showcase filled with Beatles memorabilia.

"The Mirage Hotel is happy to house this ground breaking technology," stated David Seifert, Mirage Hotel Manager. "It looks fabulous, this is the wave of the future."

This event marks the Premier introduction of the 3DFusion's 3DFMax™ 52" Auto Stereoscopic Display (ASD) in Las Vegas. 3DFusion's unique proprietary solution eliminates 3D glasses, viewing restrictions, ghosting, and the visual discomfort usually associated with 3D displays.

"I think the 3DFusion screens and their 'LOVE' content conversion is AMAZING. People stop in their tracks to watch...become instantly engaged. This is just the thing for our shows, and we are very pleased and excited," commented Cirque Marketing Director Jennifer Seigler.

In a recent HDTV Magazine publication, 3DFusion was quoted as being "the Queen of CES"...

"So which was the best looking glasses-free large screen 3DTV? Who was the 3D-glasses-free queen of CES? Not Sony's 56" 4K, or 46" 2K LCD panel prototypes shown with floor platforms that wisely limited the viewing area/angles. Not the 65" and 56" LCD models from Toshiba shown with fixed feet marks on the floor (so you better not move) in a tunnel-type booth that also precluded angled views other than straight to the set. Not even LG. The best looking large screen 3D image without using 3D glasses to my eyes was the one demoed by 3DFusion."

3DFusion HDTV Mag's "Queen of CES."

"Our 3DTV platform clearly illustrates what 3D television viewing should be. We have not only solved the 3D glasses issues without sacrificing picture quality, but we have developed the complete A to Z 3D technology upgrade as a seamless replacement for conventional 2D television," said Ilya Sorokin, 3DFusion C.E.O.

At the recent National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) Show in Las Vegas, 3DFusion demoed their "real time on the fly" 3D Camera capture on their glasses-free ASD, showing the Live Basketball game exhibition at the 3ALITY Digital booth outside of Central Hall.

Broadcast Engineering Magazine in an April 26 article penned by Michael Grotticelli observed the following: "New York City-based 3D Fusion used a live basketball game outside of the Las Vegas Convention Center during the NAB Show to demonstrate its new 3DFMax autosteroscopic transmission system, which allows viewers to watch live 3-D images without special glasses. The 3-D platform, which is designed to mimic the way the eye sees, addresses the entire production chain, from live camera capture and control room engineering to viewer display."

3DFusion Live Broadcast Rocks NAB

Scott Williamson from Ultimate AV Magazine, upon viewing the 3DFusion Live camera capture published the following excerpts from their April 15th article..."Most impressive was the complete absence of visible boundaries between viewing cones and crosstalk as I walked around the screen...Another hallmark of the system is its flexibility and adjustability..., optimized settings for a particular image can be embedded in the signal so it looks correct without having to adjust anything. One thing's for sure - this technology is the most promising glasses-free 3D I've seen, especially when applied to a 4K panel." 3DFusion NAB Ultimate AV Mag Pick

The 3DFusion 3DFMax™ technology is a Math based marriage of the classical left / right 3D stereo pairs with state of the art PC processing. 3DFusion developed this IP solution and holds the Exclusive worldwide Rights for the 3DFMax™ advancements.

"Our 3DFMax™ Broadcast Quality 3DTV package allows the end-user to adjust the depth to his personal preference, the same as he would adjust the volume on his TV," said 3DFusion president, Stephen Blumenthal. Continuing he stated..."The 3DFMax™ 3DTV as a consumer product is designed to produce a realistic, more natural 3D image which can be watched for hours with the same comfort level as current Hi Def 2D TV. Not your Granddaddy's 3D, this is the future of 3DTV."

3DFusion has also been commissioned to install their 42" 3D ASD Display in the esteemed Grammys Museum in LA, as another joint project with Cirque du Soleil. The 3DTV will be available for viewing after the second week of June this year.
