'3D Products of the Year' Awards Announced by International 3D & Advanced Imaging Society

The International 3D & Advanced Imaging Society announced thirteen products considered by its blue ribbon panel of judges to be the "Best 3D Products" of 2013. Special awards will also be presented to Mercedes-Benz, Regal Cinemas, and Sony Electronics. The awards will be presented at a ceremony to be held at Paramount Studios in Hollywood on September 18th.

"From consumer cameras to home theatres to 3D apps to automobiles…there are superb new 3D technologies in the market right now," said Society Awards Chairman, Buzz Hays. "3D technology is advancing at warp speed, and our judges had a wide variety of new products to pick from. In the end, we selected just thirteen."

The "3D Products of the Year" include:

Regal Cinemas at LA Live in Los Angeles will be honored with the Society’s "3D Theatre of the Year" Award, and Mercedes-Benz will be honored with the Society’s first-ever "Car of the Year" award for its 2014 Mercedes-Benz S-Class, featuring a stereoscopic camera safety system.

"At the movies, Regal Cinemas has made customer service and a superb 3D experience a priority for movie fans. On the highways, Mercedes-Benz is using stereoscopic 3D technology to enhance performance and safety for drivers and passengers in its new S-Class vehicles. The Society felt that these two organizations warranted special recognition," said Society President, Jim Chabin.

Additionally, Sony Electronics will be honored in the "Advanced Imaging" Category for its 84" XBR 4K Ultra-HD TV, and its 4K Home Theatre ES Projector.

"Four years ago, consumers could only experience 3D in their favorite Cineplex, and only Hollywood’s biggest directors had access to great 3D technology," added Chabin. "Today, nine of the top ten summer blockbusters at the worldwide box office are 3D movies. 3D Theatrical releases have generated more than six billion dollars this summer. Outside of the box office there are new, innovative 3D products emerging, with more on the way. 3D is a growing part of the worldwide marketplace."

The Society’s awards presentations and annual meeting will be held at Paramount Studios September 18th, 2013, as a part of "3D Week" in Hollywood and Downtown Los Angeles. "3D Week" activities include: The International 3D Film Festival at LA Live and The World 3D Film Expo at the Egyptian theatre in Hollywood.

Video Design brings Dataton WATCHOUT and WATCHPAX to InfoComm India 2013

Swedish image processing and control manufacturer Dataton and Premium Partner VideoDesign will demonstrate for the first time WATCHOUT™ version 5.5 multi-image display and presentation software alongside WATCHPAX™ solid-state media server at InfoComm India 2013. The booth will show several real-world installations including projection mapping and 3D stereoscopic viewing. Dataton will alsopresent at the hotly anticipated InfoComm India 2013 Summit on each day of the event.

Two major innovations will be shown for the first time in India with Dataton Premium Partner, Video Design.

WATCHOUT version 5.5 multi-image display and presentation software has a number of newly added features including hardware assisted synchronisation, frame blending, dynamic IP addressing ofindividual computers, cluster naming and insertion of URL based images.

The software enables show professionals to orchestrate stills, animations, graphics, video, sound and live feeds across multiple display areas, soft-edge or scattered. WATCHOUT is fully scalable and uses a Windows platform.

On the booth, the 3D stereoscopic viewing capabilities of Dataton WATCHOUT will be showcased with live 3D demonstrations throughout the show for visitors to try out 3D for themselves. Enabling the presentations, Dataton is partnering with INFITEC® GmbH who is providing stereoscopic projection systems and high-performance viewing glasses.

Also on show will be the compact WATCHPAX solid-state media server with built-inWATCHOUT multi-display software. WATCHPAX is designed for quick maintenance and scheduling. WATCHPAX comes in a discreet and stylish matte black aluminium finish measuring a tiny 127mm x 148mm x 22mm. It takes up the minimum of rack space or simply sits discreetly on the back of a flat-panel display. The unit weighs only 470 grams and consumes very little power.

Warner Bros. Finalizes Massive Fall Initiative for 'The Wizard of Oz'

Marking the 75th anniversary of one of its crown jewels, 'The Wizard of Oz,' Warner Bros. has launched a comprehensive, cross-divisional campaign encompassing theatrical, home entertainment and consumer products.

The three Warner Bros. divisions, IMAX® Corporation and the TCL Chinese Theatre IMAX will host the September 15th world premiere of the film’s first-ever IMAX® 3D release at the grand opening of the new TCL Chinese Theatre IMAX, the largest IMAX auditorium in the world and the first IMAX theatre in Hollywood. When it was known as Grauman’s Chinese Theatre, the facility was the site of the film’s original Hollywood premiere in 1939. An exclusive one-week IMAX® engagement at the new theatre and in more than 300 IMAX theatres across North America follows, beginning Sept. 20. Glasses-free 3D technology wows at the POS

TRIDELITY AG, a technology leader and pioneer in the field of glasses-free 3D display technology, is now showcasing the new Nike soccer shoes HYPERVENOM at Nike's Paris flagship store. As with all its products, Nike uses high-quality materials and the newest technologies, so it's no surprise the company chose a compatible high-tech presentation medium to present its new shoes - the astonishing glasses-free 3D POS solution from TRIDELITY.

In order to convey to the end user the fascinating experience of wearing the all-new shoe, Nike went for TRIDELITY's vivid visualization solution. Up and running since the beginning of August, the 3D display is incredibly realistic. Seemingly close enough to touch, a soccer shoe protrudes from the 2x2 (110 inch, 2.8 meter diagonal) large video wall in the Nike flagship store on the Champs-Elysees in Paris. International Stereoscopic Union (ISU) World Congress to start on August 20th

More freedom of movement while viewing glasses-free 3D

Thanks to a new image processing technique, we can now move about in a room more freely when watching 3D-TV without wearing stereo viewing glasses. Fraunhofer will be exhibiting the technology at the IFA international consumer electronics trade fair (Internationale Funkausstellung) in Berlin September 6 - 11, 2013.

In order to dispense with 3D glasses, a television needs to have information about the exact eye position of the viewer. Built-in cameras need to track both pupils continuously to obtain this information. Each eye perceives a separate image so that the 3D effect appears without using the glasses. Nevertheless, the technology still has its weaknesses. If the user moves too quickly or changes viewing position, the images appear distorted or unstable. The manufacturers prescribe optimal viewing distances that are supposed to guaranty quality viewing.

Purchasers of autostereoscopic television models today, i.e. 3D models not requiring stereo viewing glasses to be worn, are confronted not just with a high price tag, they also have to live with loss of depth and image resolution once the distance to the screen falls below or exceeds the recommended one.

The image adapts to the position of the user

Help has now arrived from the labs of the Fraunhofer Institute for Telecommunications, Heinrich Hertz Institute (HHI), in Berlin. Researchers have developed a new image processing technique that enables viewers to enjoy full 3D quality, even at different distances - and without having to wear stereo viewing glasses. As a result, viewing can be enjoyed at as little as half or up to twice the originally specified viewing distance. The trick: while software cannot eliminate image distortion, it can nevertheless shift it so that viewers always have an undistorted 3D image before their eyes. Even if a viewer moves from the initially specified position. This results from re-calculating the individual sub-pixels for the display by means of a mathematical algorithm whenever the viewer changes position. This way, images are formed that are located between the left and right eyes and are available as additional viewing points. The viewer can move not only forwards and backwards, but sideways as well, without distorted images being formed or images jumping back and forth between individual 3D views.

"Until now, this could only be accomplished by a very expensive mechanical means. The new digital processing works faster and more robustly. In developing the electronic version, we benefitted from technological progress in image resolution and image processing software," explains Klaus Hopf, HHI Group Manager for "Man-Machine Interaction". The new technology has been optimized for multiview 3D displays. This kind of display is able to provide several different viewing points so that several users can experience the effect without wearing stereo viewing glasses. The new technique now permits up to five persons to view 3D content at a distance of 30 cm (12 in) to six meters (20 ft) without impairing the apparent depth and image resolution. The freedom of movement attained enables viewing autostereoscopic displays on desktops, watching television or viewing displays in public spaces.

"Glasses-free 3D systems are currently beginning to be used in medicine, research, and industrial applications. The new software can also provide new impetus for introducing the technology into the home or in advertising," predicts Hopf. He will be exhibiting the new technique in the Fraunhofer Booth at the IFA (IFA TecWatch, Hall 11.1, Booth 21).

Magnetic 3D Swings for the Fences at SEAT 2013

Magnetic 3D, a leader in autostereoscopic, "glasses-free" 3D displays and digital signage solutions, announced its upcoming presence at the Sports and Entertainment Alliance in Technology (SEAT) 2013 Conference, being held August 4 - August 7 in Kansas City, Missouri.

In addition to providing multiple glasses-free 3D displays for the event, Magnetic 3D will also produce SEAT-branded 3D environments to house the screens. On display in all three of the conference rooms, the content includes glasses-free 3D visualizations of event-related information shared via Twitter, being displayed and updated in real-time. Attendees will not only be able to see what others are saying about the event on Twitter, but will also be encouraged to use the conference's designated hashtag, "#SEAT2013," in order to see their own tweets come alive with eye-catching glasses-free 3D graphics.

Having deployed successful glasses-free 3D campaigns at the 2010 Pro Bowl and two of the last four Super Bowls (XLIV and XLVII), Magnetic 3D is already familiar with accommodating the sports and entertainment industry. In early 2013, Magnetic 3D provided NFL Ticket Exchange® by Ticketmaster with five autostereoscopic displays and several pieces of custom content to be used at the 21st NFL Experience, a week-long event commemorating Super Bowl XLVII. Magnetic 3D also created for the event two custom glasses-free 3D feeds which, like the one crafted for SEAT, displayed and updated information in real-time. One feed was directly connected to Twitter and displayed event-related tweets; the other was linked to the website of NFL Ticket Exchange® and provided fans with current, up-to-the-minute information regarding fluctuations in Super Bowl ticket prices and availability, all in 3D.

As part of one of SEAT's many in-depth panel discussions at the 2013 conference, Magnetic 3D COO Michael Dorin will weigh in on how teams/venues can use glasses-free 3D technology to elevate engagement and the in-stadium fan experience. Dorin's session is open to all and begins at 1:20 p.m. on Tuesday, August 6, in the New York Conference Room at the Sheraton Kansas City Hotel.
