The e-mage technology cluster, the University of Liege and the TWIST cluster have joined forces to stage the first ever European event entirely devoted to 3D stereo technology. The International 3D Stereo Film and Technology Festival will be held in the Liege convention centre (Palais des Congrès), Belgium, from 1 to 3 December 2009. The event, entitled 3D Stereo MEDIA 2009, will host European professionals and experts in ALL 3D technology applications, in such areas as cinema, TV, medicine, science and technology and games, and will offer the general public a novel programme of 3D films.
The patron of 3D Stereo MEDIA 2009 is Ben Stassen, world-famous producer and director of the first ever 3D animated cartoon, "Fly Me to the Moon", and co-founder of nWave Pictures (biography attached).
A preview of 3D Stereo MEDIA 2009 was held on Tuesday, 17 March 2009 to apprise professionals and media representatives of the opportunities that 3D stereo technology holds out for Belgian businesses.
At this preview, there was a press conference bringing together the event's instigators and partners: Marie-Dominique Simonet (Minister for Research, New Technology and International Relations in the Regional Government of Wallonia), Albert Corhay (Vice-Provost of the University of Liege), Robert Stéphane (President of XDC S.A.), Jérôme Delvaux (Vice-President Technology of XDC S.A.) and Professor Jacques Verly (Head of the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (Montefiore Institute) at the University of Liege and President of the e-mage technology cluster).
Ben Stassen (nWave Pictures) broadcast his address to reporters over a 3D screen from the United States.
Why an International 3D Stereo Film and Technology Festival?
Stereoscopic (3D) technology is a real image revolution that is set to spread far beyond the film circles we know today. All media currently used to screen images will be gradually adapted to show 3D images, including television, computer screens, advertising displays, mobile phones and much more.
The image revolution will involve EVERYONE: the film and television industry, amusement parks, the media, advertising and communications firms, artists, scientists and engineers, R&D labs, manufacturers, decision-makers, film buffs, high-tech enthusiasts and, of course, the press.
This technology revolution in the field of imaging will extend to all aspects of image capture (cameras), as well as to the way in which content, images, scripts and other elements are conceived. It means that an artistic revolution is also under way. Lastly, new opportunities are emerging for firms to integrate these new technologies into their production, promotion and other activities, making it an economic revolution too.
Belgium, a European leader in 3D digital imaging
3D Stereo MEDIA 2009 instigators and partners are convinced that this triple revolution will prompt firms, training institutions, artists, the media and others in our region to seize all these new opportunities opened up by 3D technology. Our region already boasts a number of market leaders in 3D technology, including: XDC (European leader), nWave Pictures (world leader in the production and distribution of 3D content), intoPIX (a spin-off from the Université Catholique de Louvain in Belgium (UCL), which was a key player in devising the 3D digital language, JPEG 2000,) Barco, Kinepolis and internationally renowned director, Ben Stassen, to mention but a few of the most emblematic names.
Between 1 and 3 December 2009, 3D Stereo MEDIA 2009 will provide all these players with a platform where they can discuss, listen, propose and meet the world's top 3D stereo experts.
The intention is to turn 3D Stereo MEDIA into a key annual event where all Europe's 3D players can meet in Liege.
3D Stereo MEDIA 2009 – the first International 3D Stereo Film and Technology Festival
This event concerns all facets of 3D imaging.
It makes sense to promote meetings and interaction between everyone involved in 3D imaging because most of the biological, psychological and technical principles of 3D technology, as well as the hardware and software, are common to a wide range of applications: not just cinema – which concerns us all – but also medical imaging, architecture, urban planning, cartography, remote sensing, vehicle simulation, aerospace, design, etc.
In an appendix to this press release you will find further details on a wealth of scientific 3D applications.
An event for professionals- Players in the film-making chain, including: script-writers, directors, studio technicians, distributors and cinema operators.
- Manufacturers of image-capture, mass-storage, screening, imaging and other equipment.
- Players in the communication sector, including: the media, communications and advertising firms, science and amusement parks, and event organisers.
- Developers of scientific and technical applications.
- The general and trade press.
From 1 to 3 December 2009, the first International 3D Stereo Film and Technology Festival will set up its headquarters at the Palais des Congrès in Liege. The three-day festival will include the following activities for professionals:- Conferences and workshops bringing together the world's top 3D stereo experts in the fields of image capture and display, as well as content and script production.
- Demonstrations of cutting-edge technologies in the field and scientific applications (see appendix)
- Business-to-business meetings where Belgian and Walloon firms can display their vast technological potential to European participants.
- An exhibition area and stands where visitors can meet the leading Belgian and European firms in the sector and see technologically cutting-edge equipment in action, including 3D autostereoscopic TV (requiring no glasses).
- Training courses in the new 3D occupations, including stereographer.
In December 2009, Liege will be the place to be for anyone involved in this triple image revolution and all those wishing to turn it to good account to expand their business activities.
An event for the general public
The public will not be forgotten either because a 3D film festival will be open to all comers. Numerous 3D films will be shown in a Liege cinema over a period of several days. They will include a highly eclectic mix of fiction films, animated cartoons and documentaries.
By then, the Festival's first patron, Ben Stassen, will have completed his newest 3D animated cartoon, "Around the World in Fifty Years", which he will present at a World Preview in Liege on the evening of 1 December.
Lastly, recreational 3D introductory workshops will be held for the kids with the aid of the University of Liege's House of Science.
Key partnerships
Many firms in Wallonia, Brussels and Europe, together with the public authorities (Walloon Region) and the University of Liege, are lending their support to make this event a success. The list of firms that have contributed high-level technology skills includes:
XDC S.A. (subsidiary of EVS S.A.), Victor Studio, nWave Pictures, Neuro TV, Eureka and X Bo in Wallonia and Brussels, together with XpanD of Slovenia, Philips of the Netherlands and Alioscopy of France.
Other prestigious firms and organisations will join this inner circle in December 2009.
