Panasonic Develops 50-inch Full HD 3D PDP and High-Precision Active Shutter Glasses

Panasonic Corporation, a leader in high definition TV technology, has developed a 50-inch Full HD 3D compatible plasma display panel (PDP) and high-precision active shutter glasses that enable the viewing of theater-quality, true-to-life 3D images in the living rooms. Aiming to bring Full HD 3D TVs to the market in 2010, the company steps up its efforts in developing the related technology. Prototype Full HD 3D TV and glasses will be displayed at CEATEC JAPAN 2009 to be held from October 6 to 10 at Makuhari Messe in Chiba City, east of Tokyo. The new PDP and glasses evolved from Panasonic's world-first Full HD 3D Plasma Home Theater System(1) that was developed in 2008 and comprised of a 103-inch PDP and a Blu-ray Disc player. The prototype PDP has a 50-inch screen, which is expected to become the most popular size for home theaters. This 50-inch PDP uses Panasonic's newly-developed high-speed 3D drive technology that enables rapid illumination of pixels while maintaining brightness. The panel also incorporates a crosstalk reduction technology allowing for minimizing double-image (ghosting) that occurs when left- and right-eye images are alternately displayed. PDPs have excellent video response with full moving picture resolution(2). The new panel offers even improved performance, achieving clear, high-quality and high-resolution images in 3D. The high-precision active shutter glasses incorporate Panasonic's technology that precisely controls the active shutters with the left- and right-eye images shown on the PDP. All these technologies work in tandem with each other to create Full HD 3D images that deliver an immersive, movie-theater-like experience in which the viewers can feel as if they were part of the scene. They represent Panasonic's concept of 3D products: "Bringing the movie theater experience into the living rooms." Panasonic has been working to develop its original Full HD 3D technology(3) to create synergy between PDPs, which excel in moving picture resolution and color reproduction, and Blu-ray Disc players, which are able to faithfully reproduce high quality Hollywood 3D movies. Panasonic continues to work on developing 3D products to allow its customers to enjoy the immersive 3D world in their living rooms, targeting to launch the products in Japan, Europe, and the U.S. in 2010. To describe further about the technologies involved with the new panel, Panasonic newly developed the high-speed 3D drive and crosstalk reduction technologies to improve plasma's unique properties to deliver crisp and clear Full HD 3D images. As PDPs are self-illuminating device with full motion-picture resolution, they offer fast response time and are suitable to display fast-moving images. The high-speed 3D drive technology involves the development of new panel materials and LSIs that accelerate the pixel illumination while maintaining brightness. Panasonic also developed the crosstalk reduction technology using newly-developed phosphors with short luminescence decay time and illumination control technology to reduce double-images that occur when left- and right-eye image are alternated on the panel. This technology contributes to achieving high-quality clear pictures with high-contrast and accurate color reproduction. As the new technologies can also be applied to improve the quality of 2D images, they have expanded PDP's potentials for further evolution. To reproduce 3D images, Panasonic uses the Full HD x 2 frame(5) sequential method that displays time sequential images, alternately reproducing discrete 1920 x 1080 pixel images for the left and right eyes on the display frame by frame. The frame sequential method is widely used in showing Hollywood 3D movies in theaters. The new panel elevates home entertainment to a whole new level with theater-quality 3D images. The high-precision active shutter glasses employ Panasonic's technology that precisely controls the timing of opening and closing the shutter in synchronization with the left- and right-eye images alternately shown on the PDP. This technology enables significant reduction of crosstalk that degrades the image resolution in 3D display. The glasses are designed to fit for a wide range of users from children to the elderly.

	National Geographic Entertainment acquires 'Blue Man Group: Mind Blast' for Distribution

National Geographic Entertainment (NGE) has announced the acquisition of worldwide rights to the film "Blue Man Group: Mind Blast" for distribution to giant-screen, digital and IMAX® 3D and 2D theaters. The 3D live-action comedy, slated for release in Spring 2011, will feature an original screenplay and score and will star the group's original cast members. "Blue Man Group: Mind Blast" is the fourth major film acquisition for NGE this year, following the Sundance hit "Amreeka," opening in select cities throughout September; "City of Life and Death," which screened this week at the 2009 Toronto Film Festival; and "The Wildest Dream," which will be released in 2010 on IMAX® and giant screens worldwide and on 35 mm screens in the United States. Blue Man Group has been impressing live audiences since 1990 with its wildly popular theatrical shows and concerts that combine music, comedy and multimedia theatrics in producing a unique entertainment experience. It currently has permanent productions in nine cities, including New York City, Boston, Las Vegas, Orlando, Berlin and Tokyo, and frequently tours both domestically and internationally. The group was created by Chris Wink, Matt Goldman and Phil Stanton, who will star as the trio of blue men in the film, the group's first foray onto giant screens and into 3D film. 	Virtalis ActiveCube for Dun Laoghaire IADT

DUN LAOGHAIRE Institute of Art, Design and Technology (IADT) has been awarded funding from Enterprise Ireland (EI) Research Equipment Grant Call. Following an EU Tendering Process, IADT has ordered an ActiveCube, a three-sided rear projected with a front-projected floor, multi directional Virtual Reality (VR) system from Virtalis. The new system, which will be one of the most advanced in Ireland, will be a central component of the Psychology of Virtual Reality and Artificial Intelligence module on the MSc in Cyberpsychology. It will be used on other Programmes in the Institute: Animation, Digital Media, Film and Television Production, Multimedia and Visual Arts. It will also be available to other researchers and organisations outside of IADT. Dr. Gráinne Kirwan, programme co-ordinator MSc in Cyberpsychology, explained: "IADT has a mixture of programmes - some are multimedia focused, some psychology, some business and humanities and some creative arts. As such, we wanted to install a system with high resolution screens, and which allowed for easy interaction with the environment, so that experimental work could be completed, but also so that users could interact with virtual artistic works. The Virtalis ActiveCube was chosen, as we wanted the option of having multiple users interacting within an environment, with as high a degree of realism as possible. Virtalis provided a detailed specification of the system to be provided, and had obviously taken great care to consider our requirements when designing the system." Virtalis' ActiveCube is four sided, comprising three walls and a floor, with images projected using Christie Mirage S 3k projectors. Both it and the WorldViz software are powered by a Dell Precision Cluster. The ActiveCube's environment will be tracked using the WorldViz optical PPT (Precision Position Tracking) Tracking System. Virtalis will complete the installation and integration work and handover the system before the new academic term starts in early September. Virtalis is partnering with WorldViz for this installation. Dr. Kirwan continued: "The ActiveCube will allow IADT staff and students to complete research in realistic VR environments, and this realism is essential to good psychological research. It allows for a completely controlled environment - every participant in the research will experience exactly the same stimuli, which greatly improves the reliability of the study. We expect that our ActiveCube will make the IADT an even more attractive option for potential students."

SENSIO Technologies Inc., inventor of the SENSIO® 3D technology, and Sagem Communications have joined forces to premier a new 3D video solution at IBC (International Broadcasting Convention). Sagem Communications' digital set-top box, with integrated SENSIO® 3D technology, will enable consumers to view 3D content at home in full HD. The Demo at Sagem Communications’ booth (4.A080) is a first step towards commercial availability of the product planned for 2010. Thanks to this integrated solution, service providers will soon be able to reach all subscribers, equipped with 3DTVs or not, via one and unique signal, regardless of the type of broadcast network. Since the set-top box is agnostic to any type of 3D display technology implemented within TVs, it can support any type of 2D or 3D TVs thus allowing service providers to easily migrate from 2D to 3D services. 	Versatility in Action – Stereo Film Material for Auto-Stereoscopic 3D Displays

At IBC 2009 in Amsterdam, the Fraunhofer Institute for Telecommunications, Heinrich Hertz Institute in Berlin presents a technology that prepares conventional stereo film material – of the kind now used in 3D cinemas – for auto-stereoscopic 3D displays. This means that such films can be viewed on auto-stereoscopic displays in 3D without any need for special glasses. To make this possible, scientists at HHI have developed a special algorithm used to automatically generate the extra perspectives needed for 3D viewing. See the live demonstrations at IBC 2009, Hall 8, Booth C81. The prospect of viewing 3D video content on auto-stereoscopic displays in the home or on mobile end devices places providers of 3D video content before new challenges. Unlike traditional stereo or 3D cinema which relies on special glasses to create the 3D effect, the basic parameters of 3D recordings for auto-stereoscopic displays like the viewing distance or screen size can vary considerably. To adapt conventional stereo film material to the special requirements of auto-stereoscopic 3D displays so that it can be viewed on them, film content must first be converted to a suitable format. Scientists at the Image Processing department of the Fraunhofer Heinrich Hertz Institute have developed a depth-based production format in which special algorithms attach a pixel exact depth map to each stereo image. Depth image-based rendering (DIBR) techniques are then used to generate the missing perspectives. In the simplest cases, the additional depth is automatically generated, while in more difficult situations it can be helpful to support the automated process through suitable adaptation of the parameters or to manually rectify particularly critical spots. This generic depth-based production format enables adaptation to every kind of 3D display. The specific type of display defines the number of virtual perspectives which are then generated via DIBR.

The IMAX 3D camera, which flew onboard the Space Shuttle Atlantis, captured stunning 3D images of the intricate spacewalks required to service the telescope during the most recent mission last May. Shot by the STS-125 astronauts, this intimate look at the complexities of repairing the telescope will put IMAX audiences right there along-side the spacewalking astronauts. 	Virtalis Installs Second System at CNH in the US

VIRTALIS, one of the world's leading Virtual Reality (VR) companies, has just installed a second immersive visualisation suite at Case New Holland (CNH). This installation at CNH's offices in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, follows the success of their first Virtalis VR suite at Burr Ridge, near Chicago. CNH is a leading agricultural and construction equipment Company and part of the Fiat Group. Nick Valentine, a design engineer and CNH's VR specialist, explained: "Our Burr Ridge StereoWorks system has been so successful, we essentially replicated it at Lancaster. People talk about VR speeding up the product lifecycle and it certainly does, but what it really achieves is improved communication. A prime example at Burr Ridge was when both design engineers and manufacturing engineers were working together on a new lower horsepower Magnum tractor. There had been numerous iterations and there was a general assumption that the new design would simply use its predecessor's assembly carts. VR made it quite apparent that, in fact, the new assembly would not fit on the old carts, but crucially, this discovery was made in time for new carts to be made and there was no delay." The Virtalis StereoWorks configuration at CNH Lancaster boasts a massive 25ft by 14ft PowerWall which has been slightly sunken into the floor so that the combine harvesters, balers, headers and cotton pickers, that are the focus of the Lancaster site's 300 designers, can drive out of the wall in full stereoscopic 3D provided by a Christie Mirage HD18 projector. Virtalis designed a tailored Intersense IS900 wired tracking system, so that natural movement around the virtual models is maximised. The Head Mounted Displays (HMDs) chosen were nVisor SXs with a 90o field of view from NVIS. As the virtual models CNH creates have 20,000 parts, compute power and graphics rendering capability are vital. The Lancaster system features a 64 bit, quad core workstation coupled with an NVIDIA FX5600 graphics card. Although the new installation has only been in operation for a short while and most of the designers at Lancaster have not previously come into contact with VR, the Virtalis system already hosts design reviews every other day and that level of usage is steadily increasing. Kanishka Sharma, who runs the Lancaster VR suite, said: "We occasionally have 25 people from various different disciplines exploring their virtual designs in 3D. Virtalis' application of the PTC MockUp software coupled with their immersive drivers enables us to load an entire model quickly, something that was impossible before owing to its sheer size. I've seen teams build a virtual combine from the bottom up, giving them a really good insight into how it all fits together. It is quite possible to miss a 2 mm clearance on a monitor, but it is glaringly obvious in 3D at 1:1 scale" VR is used all over the world for design and milestone reviews, but CNH is also using its Virtalis system for market research and marketing. Each new programme hosts a couple of day-long focus groups where the interior and exterior styling, initial impressions and control positions and visibility are all monitored. Nick commented: "We commonly "drive" an existing model up and "park" it next to the virtual ones for in-depth comparisons by our team, but being able to use VR to share our virtual ideas with our customers and dealers adds another dimension. We find their views extraordinarily valuable and they are able to influence our designs at an early stage. This happened recently at Burr Ridge with a concept construction skid steer. After a focus group session we made changes to the controls and managed to improve the visibility. Ultimately, being able to do things like create animations of new models or images for our marketing collateral is just an intelligent use of our pre-existing CAD data that VR helps us to exploit."

	da Vinci Resolve(r) R-360-3D Lowers Cost of Stereoscopic Color Grading

da Vinci Systems introduced the Resolve R-360-3D, a next-generation Resolve(r) stereoscopic color grading system that provides a groundbreaking price-performance solution for the growing 3D post-production market. Powered by the C.O.R.E.(TM) (CUDA(r) Optimized Resolve(r) Engine) graphics processing unit (GPU) from NVIDIA(r), the Resolve R-360-3D system grades at 30fps with 2K playback and features 3D HD SDI display output. Offered at 30 percent below the cost of previous stereoscopic grading systems, the R-360-3D's speed, power, and affordability easily surpasses any 3D color grading system in its class. "By coupling our Resolve software with the technology advances of the world's leading GPU developer, NVIDIA, we can provide our clients and the post-production color grading market with powerful and cost-effective solutions for the rapidly emerging 3D motion picture market," said Gary Adams, da Vinci product manager. According to Adams, the 3D stereoscopic market has taken off during the past nine years, with 94 feature and short films produced and shown in movie theaters, IMAX(r) theaters, and theme parks. Nearly 40 percent of these movies have been released in the last year alone. Additionally, Hollywood's largest studios have announced plans to upgrade more than 20,000 2K-projection systems nationwide to digital projectors capable of showing 3D films. Currently, only about 1,300 U.S. theaters are so equipped. Similar digital projector conversion trends are occurring in other markets around the world. "As theaters transition from film to digital image projection systems, it is becoming increasingly easier to show 3D movies," Adams added. "Our Resolve R-360-3D system gives post-production facilities the ability to perform stereoscopic color grading services for feature-length films, documentaries, and commercials, along with the ability to repurpose 2D films for 3D viewing on Blu-ray(TM) DVDs." Post-producing 3D projects requires manipulation of two separate eye streams. With state-of-the-art Resolve technology, both streams can be viewed and graded simultaneously in real-time 2K on a 3D projector. Likewise, color decisions can be made and played back in real-time and in stereo without waiting for a render. Each eye stream can be graded and matched separately, with the digital images subsequently ganged and adjusted in context with surrounding shots, thus preserving the eye-to-eye match. This capability makes it possible for Resolve to convert a 2D film or commercial project to 3D simply by adding and defining a timeline for the other eye stream. Further, the Resolve R-360-3D system makes it possible to copy grades to the added timeline in a single operation, with grading then continuing in stereo. Resolve's ColorTrace(TM) feature increases facility throughput and workflow efficiency by automatically copying grades either from previous sessions or from the time editorial changes occur. Also included in the Resolve R-360-3D system are da Vinci's Impresario(TM) control panel; a GUI server with I/O capability; video audio I/O and VTR control with a breakout box; and a dual-chassis system featuring GUI monitor, keyboard, and mouse. The R-360-3D is part of the new da Vinci Resolve R-series line incorporating the latest NVIDIA Quadro(r) GPUs and delivering 30-200 percent faster performance than the previous generation of Resolve. The next-generation Resolve R-series includes the R-60, R-160, R-360, R-360-3D, R-460, R-460-3D, R-560, and R-560-3D. 	Panasonic Launches Full HD 3D Home Theater Truck Tour

Panasonic, a leader in High Definition TV technology, announced the start of a nationwide US truck tour which will give the public their first look at Panasonic's Full HD 3D Home Theater System. The Full HD 3D system, which was first introduced to industry insiders and media in the U.S. at the Consumer Electronics Show in January 2009, utilizes Plasma technology and a prototype Blu-ray Disc player to deliver true 1080p Full HD 3D entertainment in the home. The Panasonic Full HD 3D Home Theater Tour will be powered by three custom-built, expandable tractor trailers, each of which will house a Full HD 3D Home Theater environment. Each of the trucks can accommodate between 25 and 35 people per demonstration. The Tour will visit corporate headquarters of retailers, trade shows, industry conferences, universities and athletic events. One of the trucks will also be featured inside Panasonic's booth at CEDIA Expo 2009, which runs from September 9-13 at the Georgia World Congress Center in Atlanta, Georgia. 	Entity FX Creates Destination in StereoScopic 3D

Film, television and commercial visual effects company Entity FX announced that it has completed visual effects for the final sequence of the motion picture THE FINAL DESTINATION. Directed by David R. Ellis and distributed in the U.S. by New Line Cinema, the film is the fourth movie in the popular horror-thriller franchise, which deals with the chance of cheating death. THE FINAL DESTINATION raises the stakes by being the first in the series to be released in stereoscopic 3D. Entity FX was hired to complete the climactic end sequence of the movie, creating a number of completely synthetic shots with fully CG characters linked up in stereo space (left eye and right eye) with real actors seen earlier in the sequence. Entity FX used a variety of tools to complete the project, including Autodesk Maya for 3D modeling and animation and The Foundry NUKE for compositing and image effects. 	3D Stereo MEDIA 2009 - First International 3D Stereo Film and Technology Festival

The e-mage technology cluster, the University of Liege and the TWIST cluster have joined forces to stage the first ever European event entirely devoted to 3D stereo technology. The International 3D Stereo Film and Technology Festival will be held in the Liege convention centre (Palais des Congrès), Belgium, from 1 to 3 December 2009. The event, entitled 3D Stereo MEDIA 2009, will host European professionals and experts in ALL 3D technology applications, in such areas as cinema, TV, medicine, science and technology and games, and will offer the general public a novel programme of 3D films. The patron of 3D Stereo MEDIA 2009 is Ben Stassen, world-famous producer and director of the first ever 3D animated cartoon, "Fly Me to the Moon", and co-founder of nWave Pictures (biography attached). A preview of 3D Stereo MEDIA 2009 was held on Tuesday, 17 March 2009 to apprise professionals and media representatives of the opportunities that 3D stereo technology holds out for Belgian businesses. At this preview, there was a press conference bringing together the event's instigators and partners: Marie-Dominique Simonet (Minister for Research, New Technology and International Relations in the Regional Government of Wallonia), Albert Corhay (Vice-Provost of the University of Liege), Robert Stéphane (President of XDC S.A.), Jérôme Delvaux (Vice-President Technology of XDC S.A.) and Professor Jacques Verly (Head of the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (Montefiore Institute) at the University of Liege and President of the e-mage technology cluster). 	All-British First for UK 3D Indie Horror Film

Leading UK 3D stereoscopic production company Vision3 announced their appointment as exclusive 3D consultants and creative partners on 'Elfie Hopkins and The Gammons', produced by Size 9 Productions and stars Jaime Winstone (Kidulthood, Donkey Punch, Dead Set). The project is a landmark as the first British 3D feature to involve an entirely UK based creative and technical team. Up until now, 3D features filmed in the UK have relied on outsourcing from US or European based companies. Size 9 Production's decision is a crucial step in establishing 3D film production in the UK. Axis Films will supply specialist camera equipment and On Sight will handle the post production and data lab process. Vision3 was formed in late 2008 by Chris Parks, a stereographer of over 15 years, and Angus Cameron a Vfx veteran of nearly 50 features. Their 3D experience includes involvement on films as diverse as 'Journey to the Centre of the Earth', the IMAX features 'Bugs! 3D' and 'Wings of Courage' and 3D project management for Peter Jackson. During 2009 Vision3 has shot a range of 3D projects using a variety of techniques including high speed photography, time-lapse, motion control, greenscreen and specialist snorkel photography. Recent projects include filming the world's first full length 3D ballet, Swan Lake, at the Royal Opera House and an ambitious 3D promotion of Dubai's new GBP2.5 billion Metro system to be presented in September to Sheik Mohammed, the Ruler of Dubai. Ryan Andrews, Director 'Elfie Hopkins and the Gammons': "Vision3 has installed huge confidence in me when it comes to 3D film making. They have shown dedication to create a beautiful visual for the film and also a great understanding of how to enhance the story telling through 3D. 3D is basically another film making tool and Vision3 know how this exciting new technology can be used to engage an audience."
