| Additional Info | G.A. Levis. Memorie ed eredità di un artista di inizio Novecento (Memories and legacy of an early 20th century artist) was born out of an interest in bringing to light one of the authors of Piedmontese landscape painting, who lived at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. A pupil of Lorenzo Delleani, Giuseppe Augusto Levis created a vast production of works that became a faithful testimony of the historical context contemporary to him: from the en plein air shots of the Alpine valleys to the panoramas sketched during his stay in the former Tripolitania (now Libya), to the reportage of World War I. The book opens with the Diario Levis, an autobiographical narrative resulting from the juxtaposition of a series of photographs taken throughout his life, documenting places, loved ones, travels, and glimpses of his work en plein air. Different photographic techniques come together, composing a visual panorama, an intimate personal journal of images that introduces the rich painting section. The publication, consisting of numerous essays tracing the different stages of his biography and work, is a useful tool to represent the current state of research on the artist. This is accompanied by rich apparatuses, including one dedicated to the photographic collection of stereoscopies, which becomes not only evidence of Levis' interest in the new expressive instrument, but also the starting point for new studies. |
