Stereograph Dating

Old Stereographs (Stereo Cards) have various styles which allow to find out how old they are. Original sizes are in Inches. Sizes in Millimetres are given only as a hint to those not familiar with Inches.

• Photographic Images (3½" x 7" / 88.9 mm x 177.8 mm)
  • Flat Mount
    • Square Corner - 1857-1870
      • White, cream or gray - 1857-1863
      • Shades of yellow - 1861-1870
      • Red, green, blue or lavender - 1866-1890
    • Rounded corner, Standard size (3½" x 7" / 88.9 mm x 177.8 mm) - 1868-1890
    • Larger sized (5" x 7" / 127.0 mm x 177.8 mm) - 1873-1890
  • Curved mount
    • Buff - 1879-1910
    • Gray - 1892-1950
    • Black - 1902-1960
• Printed Images (3½" x 7" / 88.9 mm x 177.8 mm)
  • Black and white, or colored halftones - 1898-1930
