EXPLORATIONS OF THE THIRD DIMENSION
3-D stereoscopic images of the past and present

JON GOLDEN

Carlisle resident Jon Golden is the founder of 3D Concepts, which provides stereoscopic products and consulting. Recent projects include historical stereoscopic images, restored and presented for Richard Gutman's museum installation, American Diner Then and Now, Sports Illustrated's 2000 in 3D Swimsuit and 2001 in 3D Olympic special issues, and the Harvard-Smithsonian Astrophysical Laboratory's Starmaps in 3D -2002 installation, at the Boston Museum of Science. 3D Concepts promotes the enjoyment of stereo imaging through programs for theaters, museums and educational foundations.

For over twenty-five years, I have worked as a sound designer for the film, video, music, software and museum markets. Manipulating the stereo audio spectrum to create the illusion of space is a major part of my work. On a given day I might have recorded a narration of a historical film, the next day adding effects galore to an electric guitar, creating a moving wall of sound for a music video. My goal was to create aural images...that have depth and space to them, while making things sound good, coming out of a professional sound system or from a small radio on top of a refrigerator.

3-D stereo photography is the visual parallel to my work with sound. My philosophy is to use 3-D to enhance the visual experience, and not to use it as a gimmick to make pictures worthwhile to look at. My goal is to provide a powerful and pleasant experience of this medium. I do it through exhibits like this one, or through 3-D multimedia presentations or installations. The end result is that I get to share my dimensional images and sounds with others, in stereo…for both ears...and both eyes.

Jon is one of the principal organizers of Stereo New England and is an avid stereographer and collector of historic images, both early cards and stereo slides from the 50's. In addition, Jon is a multimedia artist and sound-designer who moved to Carlisle in 2000, but first discovered this lovely place called Carlisle, in 1977 (thought it was the boonies!) working on a recording project at Blue Jay Studios.
